Apache tomcat installation and configuration / setup in ubuntu

Step 1 - Download the Apache tomcat server from http://tomcat.apache.org/.
You can download tar or zip file from Download section.





Step 2 - After downloading extract it in same (downloads) directory.





Step 3 - Create web name folder in home directory and copy the extracted folder of apache-tomcat-7.0.73 and paste it in to newly created folder web.





Step 4 - Now set the two paths
1) CATALINA_HOME
2) JAVA_HOME

In bashrc file for that open the terminal by ctrl+alt+t
In terminal type
export CATALINA_HOME=/home/usr/web/apache-tomcat-7.0.37
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64

and press enter

CATALINA_HOME is path of tomcat extracted folder
JAVA_HOME is path where java is installed normally its usr/lib/jvm but in my machine the path is /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64

Step 5 - Run (start) the tomcat server.
By going on path /web/apache-tomcat-7.0.37/bin and execute shell script startup.sh by command sh startup.sh





Step 5 -To check whether sever is started or not open browser and type in url as localhost:8080
On success you can see the following page-
